Professor of health law at the University of Amsterdam/Academic Medical Center. He is also a judge in de Central Medical Disciplinary Board of the Netherlands and in the Appeals Court of Den Bosch, and an member of the Advisory Board of the Dutch Data Protection Authority. His research focusses on the evaluation of legislation (mainly patients’ rights, quality of care and medical decisionmaking at the end of life). Johan is the Ethics Advisor for the HealthPros Project. The role of the EA is to ensure that the project will comply with the national legislation and ethics.

Since February 2003 involved in the financial management of European Commission funded coordination-projects. He started at the University of Amsterdam with FP5 and experienced strict audits in FP6. In 2018 his first H2020 Coordination project will come to an end and he is looking forward to contribute to the steering of the HealthPros flagship to a safe haven in 2022!

His current work is driven by the ambition to move towards a new generation of indicators that will enhance international learning on value of healthcare as reported by patients themselves.  Michael studied sociology and has been working on health services research and policy advice since over fifteen years. Before working at OECD, Michael led the Dutch Healthcare Performance Report, which comprises a set of indicators measuring quality, access and affordability of the Dutch healthcare system.
